Spring for the Candidates « Thread Started on Aug 1, 2009, 5:51pm »
S'bol was taking the candidates for a walk. He strode backwards as he spoke to them, even though they were rather perilously close to the edge of the western cliffs. All around, spring greenery covered the ground and poked up between rocks and boulders, spilling over to the dark cliffs' edge.
..."It's not your fault," he was saying. "A dragon doesn't reject you out of any personal wish to slight you. And maybe it's a good thing, you know. You still have plenty to learn. And plenty of chores to do. The months after a hatching are the worst time to be a candidate - being mauled excepted of course - but It only gets better after this. After all, Asurath will rise again, maybe not this year but surely next...and with luck Liyath, too, soon after..."
"Anyhow," he finished, looking over what remained of his class with a concerned eye. "I find you all to be fine material, and if you keep out of trouble - yes, I mean you, Kyneen - I see no reason why you shouldn't Impress next time."
"Today we'll be taking a bit of a break. I know you thought we were going to attack the middens again, but we're not."
Holding up a finger, he turned on his heel and began to wander among the rocks, head down as though he were looking for something.
"Aha!" he cried suddenly, and crouching down beside two large boulders, he reached into the space between them to pull something out. Nesporth, who had been trailing after the candidates, let out a delighted trill from behind them at the motion.
The Candidate Master straightened up and turned back to his class with a boyish grin.
"Seabeachplum!" he exclaimed proudly, as if that should explain everything. "The bushes are everywhere on this side of the clifftops. They hide between the boulders for shelter from the wind. You just have to look. Go on..."
In his upraised hand trembled a rosy and five-petaled flower.
