Junior Weyrlings: Practicing the Firestone Toss

Fifth Month - Three Months of Age - 25% of Full Growth

It was late in Fifth Month, and the Junior Weyrlings were gathered out for lessons. There was a slight cool breeze blowing through the meadow grass in the pastures near the beasthold and Lake Ildath, and the wildflowers were in full bloom. Their fragrance traveled on the air, mixed with the spicy scent of clean dragonhide and the less pleasant odor of herdbeast dung: the field had only recently been vacated for the class's use, and the dark green dragoness at its far end was eying several juicy pats of bovine manure rather gingerly, seemingly reluctant to venture out of her corner of the meadow for fear of putting a foot in something other than clean grass.

Meanwhile, a small woman, new to Mavros and even newer to the weyrlings themselves, stood at the head of the class: unlike her green, she looked relatively happy to be there. Her shoulder knots were new, bright green and unfaded black, and marked her as a wingrider.

“Good afternoon,” she announced, after pausing a moment to clear her throat.“My name is Dinah, and in case you don't already know, I’m a recent transfer from Mirran. I’ll be assisting with your training from now on. And while I know it’s lovely out, and I was a weyrling once, too – I must warn you that anyone who doesn’t represent their class well today by paying full attention may become the object of Wrath’s very personal attentions. …”

Wrath, the dainty green, all elbows and sinewy dark muscle, was watching the class with a diffident eye: despite her rider’s investment in the junior weyrling’s progress she looked for all the world as though she could care less about honoring them with any sort of attention at all. Slowly and consciously, she lifted one forelimb and began to lick in between her front toes, like a large feline doing the washing rather than a dragon put in trust of an entire class: her mind, evidently, was firmly planted elsewhere.

Beloved, nudged Dinah mentally: at that, and that alone, the green started, and looked up, and seemed to remember, after a long moment, why she had been called out into the fields before the beasthold in the first place. With a little snort, she nosed at a nearby sack of firestone and picked it roughly in her jaws: Dinah winced at the sight of a small tear opening up in the burlap, fruit of the dragoness’ unavoidable carelessness, but bit her lip to keep from remonstrating.

With a whip-like jerk of her slender neck, Wrath sent the sack flying to land in the meadow grass at Dinah’s feet. The small woman leaned over and hefted up the sack in both arms for the weyrlings’ benefit.

“We’re going to be practicing the firestone toss today,” she said. “As you probably have already heard, there’s to be a summer gather in the coming months, with contests of skill for riders and weyrlings alike. I’d like it very much – and I’m sure Assistant Weyrlingmaster Marti would too – if the junior class could represent themselves decently in the firestone toss. Girls and boys alike. Now you’ll be competing directly against the seniors, who will have been practicing for months already, so this won’t be easy. But you still have time, and if we come out here regularly enough, you should all be able to make a decent showing. I’d like each one of you to find a partner to work with. Your dragons should be doing wing exercises in the meantime – have them follow Wrath.” Wrath. Wing exercises.

Yes, yes... Rather mechanically, Wrath outstretched her narrow wings, holding them in a progression of poses designed to strengthen the musculature and prepare the dragonets for their first flights, which would not be held for a long time yet but which were always many months in the practicing. Dinah had not done much teaching work back at Mirran – teaching was not something that was highly regarded there, and not something that would be delegated to the daughter of a goldwife, even the greenrider daughter of one, but she’d heard it said often enough that first flights, when properly prepared for in advance, could make or break a weyrling class, and she had little intention of not properly preparing these youngsters. For one thing, even if Oria hadn’t already scared the living daylights out of her, the old man K’ton looked as if he’d be about as forgiving as a box of nails if the juniors failed, and the last thing Dinah wanted was the enmity of both her new superiors.

“So. Pairs. Practice throwing the firestone sacks back and forth. I want you to gradually increase the distance in between you and your partner until you’re a full dragonlength apart. That’s the minimum distance every rider needs to be able to throw a sack. There are no exceptions…”

One Weyrling pair standing out in that field looked probably a touch ridiculous in comparison with their classmates.

While T'ren was among the tallest of the Weyrlings, Frith was the size of a hatchling blue. T'ren was taller than Frith was long, yet the dragonets were doing wing exercises in preparation for their first flight. Granted, it a few months away yet and even then T'ren wouldn't be riding him for a while, but they still looked awkward in comparison with the other weyrlings.

Not that either of them noticed such a discrepancy. T'ren was good at ignoring inconvenient truths, and it never occurred to Frith to care if people thought him silly. Instead the two of them stood in the field in front of the new Assistant Weyrlingmaster, blissfully unaware of the amusement of many of the Weyr and Holdfolk at the sight of them together. Frith's small head was pressed affectionately against T'ren's hand, while T'ren did his best to pay attention to what Dinah was saying.

A gather? T'ren had never actually been to a gather. As a drudge he'd always been set to work doing the work of the people who were allowed to go. He could vaguely remember brightly colored flags and lots of laughing people, but that was about it. Now he was not only going to go to one, he was going to be competing against the other weyrlings in a game! He would lead the junior weyrlings to victory and everyone would be so impressed with hi - Oh, right, wing exercises. Do that with... er... Wraith, Frith, I'll be practicing too.

Frith nodded his small pale head, carefully copying the older green's movements though he still kept an eye on T'rin, who had moved to pick up a firestone sack and was now blinking around at all the potential partners. There were so many of them; who to ask?

Karredy was as happy to find out their new lesson’s subject as she’d been with flamethrower practice. She was neither abysmal nor outstanding in handling her device, something that she was quite unused to after being hailed as a prodigy at the Weaver Hall, but Oria seemed quite relieved that both junior goldriders were progressing well enough. However, now she was starting to fully realize why Gisellaine had never been able to visit more than once or twice a month, even before Threadfall. If weyrlinghood was any indicator, she certainly wasn’t going to have a leisurely life as a dragonrider.

She shot a glance to Zalmaranth; the young gold was nearly half the size of her dark-green tutor, and equally as displeased to be present.

You are MY rider, she said with her standard tail-lashing. Even if queens were allowed to chew firestone, Karredy had a feeling that the intensity of Zalmaranth’s glare would have been enough to set the unfortunate sack alight on its own. You have no need to cart firestone around like a greenrider!

She had no idea if Weyrs with a more standard population followed such a rule, but she could certainly understand why Mavros would need every weyrling to handle firestone tossing. The fighting wing was already strained just by combating Thread and they couldn’t spare anyone, even to deliver the firestone they needed to flame it. Perhaps if she appealed to Zalmaranth’s confidence... Zalmaranth, the fighting wing can’t waste time going back and forth for firestone, and it’s not like it’s going to be HARD to toss a sack around.

Whether it was from such cajoling or the fact that Wrath was demonstrating wing-strengthening exercises that Zalmaranth deemed worthy of her time, the gold’s temper cooled slightly. It looks very easy, she stated as Wrath completed the exercise, then began so forcefully that Karredy could feel a small wind as the young queen progressed through the movements. It was very promising to imagine what she’d be like in the air, but the goldrider wondered if her dragon could keep it up for the entire lesson.

“Just don’t wear yourself out too much, all right Zalmaranth?” She took a nearby firestone sack and lifted it with more ease than she expected--her month of flamethrower practice seemed to be paying off.

I shall not tire, Karredy. I am a queen, she replied, and there was something suspiciously close to fondness underneath her firm tone. She took care to smooth out the movements of her wings, though, and kept an idle eye on her rider as she looked around for a partner.

B'kar rather thought he was starting to get the hang of soothing Polth. He kept a hand on his dragon as Dinah explained the rather simple aspect of firestone tossing, and focused on the now familiar exercise of keeping his mind broad, open, and unconcerned. Polth, at least, no longer trembled outright at Zalmaranth's presence, though he kept a safe distance.

"Shouldn't be too hard, now." B'kar remarked, taking away his hand and good-naturedly shooing the Blue away. "Practice your wing exercises and don't wear yourself out."

Y-yes. The Blue said somewhat distractedly, lightly making his way towards Frith before he stopped, looking plaintively back at B'kar. Please be careful, mine.

B'kar grinned and nodded, curls quivering as he shook his head, gesturing on the dragon. Then he searched for a partner, and with a twisted sort of pleasure, found Kerredy in the midst of the same process.

Well, nothing like becoming comfortable with his Bonded's terror's Bonded. His grin faltered for a moment while his brain chewed over that.

"Needa partner?" B'kar asked Kerredy, smiling comfortably.

Mine! Polth cried softly, worried.

“Actually, I do,” she replied gratefully, though it was with a tinge of concern when she found out it was B’kar, whose blue was not only skittish but among the most openly terrified of Zalmaranth. Oh, well--she’d ironed out the harshest aspects of her queen’s personality, and B’kar was doing a good job of making sure his dragon wasn’t reduced to a quivering lump every few minutes. (Usually by Zalmaranth.)

The young queen was currently too focused on her wing exercises to give much notice to her blue clutch-mate, although she did shoot a glare at B’kar. The bluerider wasn’t that much shorter than Karredy, especially since he had at least four or five more years of growing, but Zalmaranth seemed to take the two or three inches of height difference as an insult to... whatever she was annoyed about this time. He’s smaller than you, she remarked contemptuously. Can he even lift a firestone sack?

Zalmaranth, remember what we said about being polite?

No.

Right--dragons had short memories. She’d have to make it a point to remind the queen about her less-than-friendly observations more often. Karredy glanced at the gap between her and B’kar, then backed up until the distance between them was about ten feet. “Let’s start from here.”

"Surething, goldrider." B'kar answered cheekily, getting ready to catch whenever Karredy threw. He wouldn't poke too much fun though, as it must be hard to be bonded to such a mean dragon, and a queen at that. Even he wouldn't wish that on any of his enemies. Poor thing probably had enough stress. Trying to imagine weyrlinghood without Polth's sweet support was a terrible thought.

Mine? Polth interjected quietly, on cue.

What is it?

You will be okay with her? The Blue sounded like he feared Kerredy would bully him as directly as Zalmaranth spread her terror, and B'kar laughed reflexively.

She ain't her dragon, love, it's fine.

Oh. Gently chastised, Polth again focused on his exercises, not noticing that his fear lessened as he concentrated. B'kar did, and was grateful, tucking that fact away for later concern.

Tamerra eyed the firestone sack warily, then grasped two corners of a firestone sack and pulled. Palmyrath was busy with wing exercises, but took a pause between movements to encourage her, Don't worry, Mine! You can lift that with no problem.

Lifting--is not--the problem, Tamerra managed to respond. If she hadn't already been in weyrling training for months, there would be no question of her humiliating herself in this game. However, now she could just about manage a smooth (if slower than average) heft even with her stick-like arms. No, the problem was how she would be able to throw the firestone. Catching it seemed less embarrassing, if only because she could blame her poor throw on an awkward grip... or something.

Tamerra caught sight of a partnerless weyrling--tall with a vague dreamy expression on his face. He looked familiar (Frith's rider, Palmyrath supplied, and then reminded her further, My white brother.) Most importantly, he already had a sack, so she put hers down and approached him. "Hello... T'ren? Do you need a partner?"

While lifting the sack had been less troublesome than she’d thought, it had taken her until now to realize that throwing the firestone sack would be harder. Her arms were starting to stiffen from the few minutes she’d been holding it, and a voice in the back of her head told her (sounding suspiciously like her father’s most exasperated and stern tone) that she should have put it down while she’d been looking for a partner instead of hauling it around like some upstart apprentice smith.

I don’t worry about what my father thinks, Zalmaranth remarked as she read Karredy’s thoughts. If Exionth leaves me alone, your father shouldn’t trouble you so much either.

Would Gerran be annoyed at Zalmaranth’s casual dismissal of him, or would he start liking how similarly they thought? Karredy resolved to never have them speak to each other in case the latter happened, and then threw the sack as far as possible. Its path barely reached the height of her head, moving like it was underwater, but as its momentum increased as it reached B’kar.

Dropping off the ledge, she swallowed against the dizziness that accompanied the fall, before Nereoth banked, to catch the prevailing wind. Spreading her wings, she soared letting the air carry them up and over the cliffs toward the pasture.

A new assistant was currently working on the Firestone toss, with the Jr weyrlings, since her untimely absence, she’d finally started feeling much better, after suffering through a sevenday long virus. Today she’d been cleared to get back to her duties.

I have not yet met Wrath, so I will see if she would like any introductions, because she is new, and who better to introduce her, than I?
Smiling, Marti watched as they slowed, feeling the shift in Nereoth’s hindquarters as she readied herself for landing. “Yes love you would defiantly be the one to introduce her to everyone.” She laughed!

Leaning into the landing Marti waited only as long as necessary before quickly unbuckling, to swing herself down to the field. Stuffing gear in pockets even as she blotted her nose with the back of her arm, Marti made the walk over to where the class had set out the sacks trying to gage how best to throw the cumbersome bags..

Taking stock of the weyrlings she watched as the weyrling goldrider hefted her sack. It might take some effort now, but in a few short months, she’d be throwing it the length of a small Blue.
Turning to the newest Weyrling Master Assistant next to her she smiled slightly, “good to meet you. I appreciate your help with the class, the name’s Marti and my green is Nereoth. I hear you’re a new transfer here? Where did you hale from?”

Dinah had one eye on the weyrlings and one eye on the Marti and Nereoth as they approached. She glanced a bit nervously over at Wrath, wondering if the dragoness had noted the presence of the other green yet: the slightly feral glint in her orange eyes was assurance enough. Dinah's own gaze narrowed slightly.

Wrath.

The warning in the thought was enough. Wrath, who had paused in the exercises to eye her cheerful fellow with about the same amount of goodwill a hold steward might give grass on the fireheights, resumed her wing rotations with a little snort.

"Yes. I came in a day or so ago from Mirran." Dinah smiled. "Your Weyrwoman said you needed some help, and Wrath wasn't getting along that well with the greens we were initially supposed to drill with, so she sent us over here...I hope it's not an inconvenience for you." Her brow wrinkled for a moment, with some real concern: she added, rather earnestly: "I will make sure Wrath behaves herself. But you might want to warn Nereoth away from her. She can be...antisocial."

Dinah ran a long-fingered hand through her cropped hair, grimacing a bit. Wrath's behavior was half the reason they'd had to leave Mirran. As for the other half...while, that would make an even more awkward subject of conversation.

She remembered herself, though, and moved the hand down to rest on her belt, looking up at Marti again. The weyrlingmaster seemed capable enough. She wasn't surprised. She didn't think Oria would have tolerated anything less, at least not if you went by the woman's reputation. Nor K'ton, though that one more out of general bad temper than stiff idealism and desperation.

She glanced at the weyrlings as they threw their sacks: none of them seemed to be having too much difficulty. "Do you think we should put them in a circle?" she asked Marti. "You know, that old game where you toss one sack back and forth in a group, and gradually increase the distance between the players?"

She'd done it in her weyrlinghood: perhaps Marti had been trained differently, though. It was a good exercise - would probably leave the class with sore arms for a few days afterwards, but there was nothing wrong with a little effort expended. Besides, they'd be less likely to get up to trouble in the barracks later that night if they were tired out.

Some of B'kar's easy confidence evaporated as he concentrated at the sack sailing towards him. While life in the weyr wasn't exactly pampered, he'd never really been one full of muscle like some of the other prospects. His short time of weyrlinghood wasn't a vacation either, but- oh shardit there it was and-

"Oomph." He voiced unwillingly, staggering back slightly as the sack collided with his outstretched arms. Perhaps his short stature and stock frame were to be of use after all. That gangly T'ren was going to have a time of it, unless his long arms would absorb the shock.

"I kin tell we're to have some fun today, yeah?" He asked Kerredy, readjusting the sack so that he could throw it. B'kar's sky-blue eyes narrowed slightly as he put as much force as he could behind the throw, watching as the sack flew much too high, heading for an erroneous course of about two-thirds of the way to Kerredy and too far to the left, landing in a heap. B'kar decided to take pride in the height and ignored the landing.

"Just a warm-up throw there, sorry." He added, somewhat late.

You need practice. Polth remarked, meaning well, but laughing in his dragonish way in the back of B'kar's mind.

So do you. B'kar bit back defensively, if Polth's fluttery wing exercises were anything to judge.

We could practice together later? Polth asked, not at all hurt by the comment.

Maybe tomorrow. B'kar said, then winced because waking up tomorrow was going to be a sore process. Then he snapped himself back to the present, in case Kerredy thought he was paying attention and brained him.

This is boring.

You're bor- No. No, he wouldn't stoop to that level. Doriath was trying enough at times, but nobody was worth resulting to childish retorts over. That was just pitiful.

L'ach. I said, this is boring.

Yeah, and? What do you propose I do, ignore the lessons and gallavant off somewhere with you instead?

Well...Yes. Why not?

For a dragon who thinks himself an intellectual, you can be horribly stupid at times. Keep quiet and focus on those wing exercises the amusingly named Green is demonstrating.

Ignoring the mental grumbling as his ever-gracious Bronze began to exercise in a oddly lazy, smooth way, , L'ach surveyed the lesson area with no small amount of sour resignation. He'd have to work with someone to do this, and they would, of course, want to chat. Probably about the weather. Why did people even bother talking about the weather? It was there for everyone to see, wasn't it? Why talk about something that was so evident?

Sighing, he strode over to the nearest sack of firestone and hefted it, testing it's weight. Not bad, I guess, though the weight will get tiresome after a while of throwing.. Thanks to the endless sword practicing he did, he was used to mindless, repetitive motion, which should come in useful. Shrugging to himself, resting the sack on his shoulder, he cast about looking for a partner that seemed to have very little inclination to talk, about the weather or anything similarly frivolous.

((Rar failpost. Be gentle, I've been gone a while.))

T'ren stared at Tamerra without recognition a moment. A partner? Were they going to be dancing? He did like danci - oh wait, that's right, the firestone. The remembrance of their task and his recognition of Palmyrath's rider came simultaneously, and T'ren beamed at her. "Hiya, Tamarra. I think I need a partner, yeah, no one's come over here yet? So I'll be yer partner if ya want." Childishly enthusiastic speech completed, he hefted the firestone sack. The months of weyrlinghood on top of years of drudgework had made him surprisingly strong despite his thin frame. Who would have guessed the seemingly malnourished youngster could actually lift firestone, let alone as easily as he did.

Granted, it wasn't really all that easy. But the way he unthinkingly tugged and moved and held the sack made it certainly look easy. He'd probably hurt more in the morning than most others, though, because he didn't even notice his muscles straining. Of course none of that bothered him! And the strength difference inherent between males and females, and the size difference between him and the girl, didn't even occur to him.

"Where should we start, then?" he asked brightly.

B’kar managed to catch the sack without getting bowled over, to her surprise. His responding throw was much higher than Karredy’s had been, but the extra effort used for its height meant that it wasn’t as accurate as hers had been. It also hadn’t quite reached her, and so she’d had to fetch it from where it landed a few feet short and to the side.

Don’t throw it yet, Zalmaranth said once she reached her original spot.

Why not?

He’s distracted, the queen explained distastefully. Polth said he’d need practice--which is such a difficult thing to discern, from how he threw that sack.

She shot a glance at the other weyrling; he did indeed have the faraway look that Gisellaine often had when talking to Zedorianth. She waited till his expression returned to normal, then stepped back and lunged to get enough momentum for her second throw. The firestone sack was much the same as her last throw, even if Karredy had needed extra effort to do it. By the Egg, her arms were already getting sore.

Tamerra was envious as she watched her new partner lift the sack with ease. She wasn't sure which would be more embarrassing--the situation right now, or what it would be if her brother were here. This would definitely be the part where he would start hovering and telling her to get a lighter sack, or stop completely.

Don't worry, Mine! Palmyrath was relentless in broadcasting encouragement, as always. It did rather help her apprehension, even if it wouldn't do a thing for her physical strength. You can do it!

"I suppose we can start around here. I'd rather not get too far away..." So that when her turn came around, Tamerra wouldn't embarrass herself further by throwing the sack and having it fall short. She trotted away till about a third of a dragonlength was between herself and T'ren, then sighed and braced herself.

"All right, T'ren," she called. "You can throw the sack now."

The second catch went much better than the first. B'kar was ready as the sack came tumbling out of the sky at him, and braced himself nicely, though he could probably have gotten a better grip on the thing. He fiddled with his grip, face gone serious in concentration.

Now he had to work on his technique. Obviously the last one had been terrible.

I'm hungry. Polth announced. B'kar paused, blinking a few times.

Didn't ya just eat?

...this exercise makes me hungry. The Blue replied, then grew distanced as he watched Wrath with some trepidation as she stared at Nereoth. When the Green resumed the exercises again, he rapidly put some energy into them, hoping the Green wouldn't criticize him.

Distracted by his dragon's rather intrusive thoughts, B'kar shook his head once, to get a particularly long curl out of his vision. He'd have to cut that soon, but for now- there! He heaved the sack in a straighter line than before, and it had sufficient height without rainbowing.

Maybe this wouldn't be so hard. B'kar winced though, as he rolled his shoulders a bit. Well, it would be strenuous, but after you got the concept it got easier, right?

Hopefully they wouldn't have to do this often.
