 Calm before the storm
« Thread Started on May 2, 2009, 5:59am »

'Getting ready for Thread shouldn’t be a rushed affair that’s why they rode sweeps and had watch riders', Marti thought as she pulled on the first boot, stomping the heavy riding boot into place, before leaning over to repeat the process with the other. Fastening the boot buckles before pulling the pant legs down. Great! I’m all ready sweating. Ner, we need to move it.

Trying to ease a sudden case of nerves she needed to focus! They were about to fight thread and they didn’t have enough riders! Shard it! But if they could just get a few more transfers, and a gold, they could use the help!
Moving toward the small table she grabbed her lucky mark. After the disastrous first Thread fall she had made her special mark, that her father had given her into a necklace. Slipping it on she sighed as she tied the knot she’d found herself wearing it more and more lately. “Ner, we need to get you ready, and find out where the wings are forming”.
Hearing the green turning to come in from where she sat on the ledge, Marti grabbed the fighting harness from the pegs on the wall before heading in to dragons portion of the weyr. Crooning as she lowered her head to nuzzle Marti, Nereoth sent thoughts of love and devotion, as she accepted the harness. Raising her head to shiver/an/shudder it down her neck she gazed toward hers. Mine do not worry. Lifting her foreleg as Marti crouched to reach under her belly for the strap, pulling it over to buckle it in place Moving around to attach the chest straps, I know love we will always be together, sighing before smiling, “we survived the storm, and I’m just nervous is all. I’ll be fine once we fly”. Standing back to check the chest plate, “how does it feel too tight”? It feels good, we can check it again when we get our firestone. “Ok let me get the rest of my gear”.

Turning to stride back in to the main room reaching for the heavy leather coat, she made sure there was no rips or snags before shrugging it on and adjusting it into place fastening the buckles with slightly shaky fingers. Taking a calming breath before moving to grab her gloves, helmet and flight goggles as she strode out of the weyr. Ajusting the gloves as she strode out to the ledge were Nereoth sat watching, as dragons dropped from weyrs to glide down toward the beach. “A lift if you please”... Craning her head back, but of course.
Lowering herself she offered her foreleg for Marti to climb up. Buckling in for the short flight down to acquire their firestone “alright let’s get you loaded up and we’ll be off”. Taking a deep breath she settled back as they dropped off the ledge, she wished for a cup a klah right about now...

Rummaging through his weyr at a furious pace, K'ton finally found his helmet lying in the midst of his sleeping furs, where he had knocked it down on his way in from the feast the night before. He knew he shouldn't have had so much of that Benden...His head was still pounding and his flight jacket, oddly enough, had been stuffed into a glow basket. He couldn't help wondering whether that had been entirely accidental.

No doubt it had been that confounded Nirra. Never should have trusted a greenrider to fetch anything. Especially that one. Poor flier, and untrustworthy. If this had been his wing - if this had been his wing he would have -

But it was no use thinking what he would have done, because he couldn't do anything: he was a bronze wingrider now, and the only recourse left to him was to go complaining to Mabley about the trick, and even the thought of that that stuck in his throat. Going to her, like some errant child complaining to its mother?

Well, at least he would have the satisfaction of seeing Tyth and his rider grounded for the duration of the Fall. Mabley's leg had acted up again, and now A'liam, that newcomer, was to serve as a temporary wingleader.

They had less than twenty minutes now before the fall would be upon them. All in all it was a disaster, one which Oria ought to have foreseen and hadn't. The woman was fine for ideals and posturing, K'ton thought, but useless when it came to common sense.

He ran out onto the ledge, pulling on his goggles as he did so, and sprung onto Sorth's back with practiced skill. Even with a hangover he managed it, he noted, with some bitter satisfaction. He might feel terrible, but he and Sorth could still put the rest of the riders to shame. Now was his chance to demonstrate why he, and not some bluerider, and not some brownrider, and not even that pompous fool B'rax, should have been leading them.

Yes! Sorth cried. They will see!

And the great bronze swooped down over the bay, headed for the beach where firestone was to be given out. From the air, K'ton could see Marti and Nereoth, but no one else. He let out a hoarse laugh.

"Well, greenrider," he called out sarcastically, "It looks like it's just going to be you and me, eh?"

His pale eyes shone brightly, and moments later Sorth came in for a surprisingly delicate landing. K'ton had no idea why the others were taking so long, but neither did he care. He had seen the silver veil coming towards them across the sea, and the battle spirit was coming to him, swelling in his chest and sending pleasant chills down his spine. It had been too long since he and Sorth had fought.

Let others cower at the memory of the Threadstorm! It had been the first time in years that either of them had truly felt alive. From now on, there would be no colored ropes to fly against ever again, no pale substitution for battle in the form of a game! Years spent winning, tournament after tournament, were now to be put to the test.

And they would prove their worth again, as they always had when tested.

Green Onath swooped by, and Nirra tossed him a sack of firestone with a wicked grin. K'ton only shot her a quelling glare, and spat down on the ground. Typical greenrider.

Give me some, Sorth said eagerly, swiveling his large head around and opening his mouth wide.

K'ton served him with the speed of long practice, and finally flung the empty sack aside. Now, to the air!

Reaching into the bag of firestone, Marti rummaged through the few pieces left till she felt a sizable piece. “Alright love, turning she held up the piece of stone this it and we should be ready what do you think”?
I will have a strong flame and Thread will fear me!

Giving a light laugh, “here you take this, I want to check your straps one last time before we launch”. With care Marti offered her the final piece, giving her snout a quick rub before moving around the green checking her straps, adjusting the padding and making sure no areas of Nereoths hide needed attention before they took to the air.
I’m ready”. Turning she caught sight of a bronze winging down from the weyrs. Mounting up she settled herself into the saddle, buckling her fighting straps then attaching the safety straps. Giving them a good tug before adjusting the two bags of firestone which hug to either side of Nereoth’s neck.

Hearing the bronze rider express his feelings about the lack of riders who’d turned out made the realize that she’d not heard what her orders were. Where were the others?

“Rising up to stare at the bronze rider she gave him a shout, hey K’ton, how bout you and that big bronze of yours lead? We’ll cover your tail”!

Lowering her goggles, she hurriedly pulled on the heavy riding gloves adjusted her fingers to insure a snug fit. “Love, I’m ready. Tell Sorth we follow him and K’ton since were unsure where to go”.

"Let's fly"!

Sorth launched himself up into the sky, climbing up over the clifftop with powerful beats of his bronze wings. And K'ton, who had been not displeased by Marti's words - at least SOMEONE recognized his innate leadership ability - glanced up only to be disappointed yet again.

There they were, assembled to the east. It looked as though the entire First Wing was already gathering in formation over the plateau, preparing to fly headlong against the Fall. Both he and Marti were not ahead of the game, but rather somewhat behind it...

"Faranth's bones," growled K'ton. This was just his luck. Bad-temperedly, he yelled down to his fellow rider: "They've beaten us over there. You coming or not?"

OOC - I think maybe if we skip ahead to the actual threadfighting, then we can avoid touching the other characters, apart from assuming there are enough of them there to form a wing, and that they've been ordered by someone in authority to go ahead. NPC's Onath, Vronth and Belarth and their respective riders can be freely used. Anyone who wishes to jump in after this point is welcome!

With a triumphant bugle, Sorth plunged forward into the fall. In the upper level of the formation, he flamed first one spiraling fall of thread, then another, whipping his massive head around, whirling in the air. K'ton, his face as set and as furiously radiant as one might ever see it, periodically refueled him with firestone, and laughed manaically whenever the dragon performed a particularly foolhardy and deadly maneuver.

If it was such heedless and madly effective work which had earned him demotion, it was also this which had kept him alive during the first storm. K'ton did not fear, and neither did his dragon.

So they fought, until a particularly large clump of Thread came spiraling down and scored Sorth's left foreleg. The dragon roared, and flashed momentarily Between.

Even as he did, another clump plummeted down through the empty air, heading for the grassy top of the plateau. Weyrwoman Oria, already occupied several dragonpaces down and to the right, did not see it. And neither did green Onath's Nirra, who was just blinking out and back to the firestone caverns, having made yet another successful delivery.

Gleaming, silver and deadly, the tangled knot of alien matter spiraled towards the ground.

Wings beating hard, Gamath dove down towards the clump. The moment it was in range, he belched a stream of fire into it.
B'rax leaned forward and placed another lump of firestone in the dragon's mouth, then scanned the skies while Gamath chewed on the lump.
The Weyrleader at Benden had chosen him as the leader of the Interceptor Wing for a reason, and not just that Gamath was one of the fastest and most agile dragons there.
B'rax was well capable of leading that sort of wing, but he wasn't used to compensating for the slower, more long-winded dragons of other wings.
A filament of Thread streaked past B'rax's face and he swore; it was falling completely unpredictably, and-.
Gamath swung around and burned the offending filament, only for Thread to lace his left wingtip. Immediately, he went between, and emerged a short distance away, in the perfect position to burn the offending clump.
He swung his head around again and B'rax pulled the last lump of Firestone from his sack, signalling to the nearby dragonriders to ensure that they were aware of the situation. Gamath called for more.

B'ram was flying it cautious; after the lacing over Lemos, he had no intention of repeating the cocky mistakes he'd made.
Banking, Ganth flamed a clump of thread, economising on his flame as best he could.
Are you doing alright, my friend? he asked.
The dragon sent a general affirmative over their link, and B'ram nodded, scanning the skies again.
