1. Basic Weyr Info « Thread Started on Feb 28, 2009, 5:20pm »
Why Mavros? Because it sounded interesting, and there weren’t many weyrs around that ended with –vros. Alis volat propiis means “She flies on her own wings” in Latin. For a Weyr composed of exiles, it seemed oddly appropriate. The Latin’s purely for decorative purposes – in game, the weyr’s motto is always spoken in English, as Latin doesn’t exist on Pern.
We recognize gold, bronze, brown, blue, and green dragons, the five basic colors found in Anne McCaffrey's books. We have one white, but he's patterned after her character Ruth (sterile, asexual, and basically a genetic aberration) and for the sake of probability there is unlikely to be another.
Dragons Impress (bond with telepathically for life) their riders according to loose canon guidelines:
Golds - straight/bi females Bronzes - straight/bi males Browns - all males Blues - all males, sometimes females Greens - all females, sometimes males
Golds and greens are female, while all the other colors are male. Around 50% of dragons are green and sterile by genetic design, while the fertile golds, the brood hens at the top of the totem pole, so to speak, are the rarest.
Mavros Weyr exists in an Alternate Universe version of 10th Pass Pern, where AIVAS was never discovered and the Red Star still comes close enough in its orbit to send deadly spores called Thread down onto the planet's surface. [code word=ribbon]
A weyr is where dragons live with their riders: a hold is where the everyday people they protect live. Both the hold and the weyr at Mavros were constructed within natural caverns, as only stone or metal can guard people against falling Thread. And since Thread is a mindless alien life form which eats everything organic it can get at alive, it's very much in the interest of the islanders to keep it away...
