Welcome guests! Here's a place besides the c-box where you can leave questions about the site. A staff member will answer them, and you may get to meet one of their characters, too.
Example:
Why is this site so green?
Sorth: What are you complaining about? That's a very fetching little dragon in the header there, I'll have you know...*ahem* Fetching for a green, that is.
Pernese dragons come in five different colors, and we're having a green-themed August. Greens, sterile females, are the lowest ranking dragons, but they also make up 50% of the population, and are very agile and important when it comes to fighting Thread. (Sorth, a bronze, is nearly at the top of the food chain and thus maintains a condescending opinion of them. He's also just a bad apple.) Greens are a vital part of any weyr: hopefully the theme will inspire people to RP them!

I'm afraid not. The type of dragons available for RP at Mavros are Pernese dragons, who are genetically programmed to be completely psychologically dependent on their human riders. They literally cannot survive without a rider: when their rider dies, they go between and perish in an alternate dimension. (This was a safeguard programmed into them by their designer, presumably so creatures that powerful would never find themselves acting without the guidance of a human being, and therefore out of human control.) Much of the fun of Pern RP is in developing the relationship between your dragon and their rider, with all the conflict that that entails.
HOWEVER, Pernese dragons were genetically engineered from fire lizards, and you can play a wild fire lizard, which is basically like a miniature dragon. It can't talk, but it can breathe fire when it chews firestone and communicate telepathically with images and emotions. Right now, we're actually having a wild fire lizard mating flight, and are in need of people to play browns, blues, and bronzes as they try to catch the gold queen . (The one who catches her will be the father of the next domestic fire lizard clutch.)
Sorth - Dragons can't live without their riders. Losing your rider, that's the end of the line. Doesn't really bear thinking about.

Yes, but if you play a wher, you will also need to fill out a profile for and play the wher's human handler, whose job it is to look after him/her and make sure he/she doesn't get into trouble around the beasthold. Here's an example of a wherhandler profile, and a wher profile. Wherhandlers guide their whers in the completion of various tasks and duties, like hunting tunnelsnakes or clearing away debris from cave-ins, and work primarily at night, as whers are nocturnal.
Being a wild fire lizard would definitely allow you more freedom to have fun: whers have to spend a good deal of their time working, while fire lizards spend a lot of time playing with one another and hunting for food.

Just submit it like any other application in the apps forum - a wild fire lizard character doesn't count towards your character total, so you don't need to worry about reaching the six character limit earlier because of it. ^_^
PS - You may make any color but gold. There is one wild NPC queen on the island, and she's on the elderly side.

Ah - so, my rider Z'fan and his blue have been accepted. Do I need to arrive and be formally (or not) welcomed or can/should he have 'been around' but not particularly noticed before?
And, is there an open thread or so where I can get my feet wet?

Doing an arrival thread is optional - a lot of players choose to just dive in and say their characters arrived recently. Basically the WW has made it known throughout Pern that anyone is welcome to throw in their lot with the islanders - she's even accepted a Mirranese rider, so she'll take anyone. If you'd like an arrival thread, I can set up one with K'ton or Oria, or you could PM another player with a rider charrie and ask if they'd like to be the one who greets Z'fan as he comes to the weyr.. (As for open threads: Here's one in the kitchens, one at the lake, one by the red wood, and he is also welcome to come into the junior weyrling lesson, where his expertise would be very helpful. Or you could wait for me to get my act together and post the next senior lesson, which might be more interesting (wing drills as opposed to throwing firestone sacks around. xD)(I really like the idea of the mentoring system you PM'ed me about - I will try to get back to you ASAP about the plot ideas, once I've figured out how to fit them in with the coming gather)

I'm technically not a guest anymore... lol but thought it might make a good question for guests to see.
Once an applicant for Candidate is approved, is there a thread that he/she should post in first? I see no rules of where to present oneself, though I do see threads on Candidate training. There are two Should I post there, first, or solicit a thread, or look for yet a third option...?

Well, there's no rule about what you have to do first - mostly what ends up happening is either people throw their candidates into open threads (nearly all the threads here are open) or formal lesson/activity threads, or they just start their own open thread and wait for others to join them. : )
There is a weyr-wide thread in the Creche now where you can put your candidate if you want to have them on creche duty when a rather odd incident occurs. The Candidate Master and his dragon will be present, so it's sort of like a formal candidate thread, only open to the whole weyr so there's more opportunity for interaction. But if you want to start your own thread, that's encouraged too - you're even free to "fuzzy time" with your character, that is, have them in more than one thread at time, even ones that take place months apart - however many you can keep straight.

Hi!
So I've read the introduction here, the history of Mavros Weyr, but I cannot find any information about how much/if any of the McCaffrey dragon abilities etc are existent in your RPG setting? I know you say that the AIVAS plotline never happened, thread still fall ... but what about the new dragon abilites that apparently show up in the more recent books (I stopped reading after "The Masterharper of Pern", hence why I say 'apparently'). (I also didn't know Whers came in colours! Or did I forget? I remember Lessa and the Watchwher from the first book, but other recollections of Whers fail to memories in my brain. Do they show up later?)
So my question, erm: being someone that turned away from reading Pern books when things got a bit too crazy for me there (my personal oppinion only, I mean no disrespect), how much would I need to catch up on to fit in here?

Well, the whers in Anne's original books weren't described in much detail, but Todd Mccaffrey, her son, later wrote books where they came in colors. Here, we have an extrapolated version of Anne's whers, coming in colors, but without the other special abilities Todd gave them (going between, eating Thread at night, flying).
Anyway, our dragons have telepathy, but not telekinesis - they can talk to their riders at some distance, and to each other likewise, but they can't move objects with their minds.
More info on this game's version of whers can be found (here), and info on the dragons (here).
Basically, all you need to be familiar with is how the world worked pre-AIVAS, before the more complicated tech/abilities were discovered. Hope that helps!
